Release Notes:
The Dutch band Cords that was founded in 1990 by Simone
Holsbeek (vocals), Trush (formerly known as Maz) Morsink
(guitar), Arnoudt Pieters (drums) and Marc Fabels (bass),
found a very unique sound amidst influences such as Sonic
Youth, Soundgarden,My Bloody Valentine and Smashing
Pumpkins, which can be best described as noise
rock-meets-psychedelia. That distinct sound was picked up
by the legendary BBC radio maker John Peel, who invited
Cords to London for a Peel Session.
Being Melody Maker's pick for '93 Cords caught the
interest of NYC based TVT Records and despite offers from
both Dutch and English record companies, Cords as one of
the first Dutch bands in history signed a record deal
with them for their debut album, Taurus No Bull. The band
moves into a loft in downtown New York during the
recordings and do lots of gigs (including the notorious
CBGBS). Later that year they recorded the Gasping EP at
The Magic Shop Studio (NY), again followed by a tour
through the U.S.A Briefly interupted for a performance
on the very first Lowlands Festival.
In 1994 Cords embark on two extensive European tours with
The Gun Club. Jacky Sunshine joined Cords on bass and big
festivals like Roskilde, Sziget Hungary and Dynamo Open
Air all got their share of the searing noise music by
Cords.
The 2nd full length album Hear! See! Feel! Taste! was
initially released independently in 1995, but soon
licensed to Emperor Norton in the States and Shock Records
in Australia. A short tour 'down under' followed whilst
Cords added fifth member Yuko Murata.
1997 saw the release of their successor No Guru No Method
No Beeper and in 1999 the by Steve Albini (PJ Harvey,
Nirvana) recorded album Lunchbox is released. However,
in October of the same year the members decided to pursue
their own musical paths, which meant the end of Cords.
Or did it?
A single reunion gig in the summer of 2004 seems close,
but the sudden death of drummer Arnoudt Pieters in July of
that year puts a sad end to those plans. In 2009 two
requests for Cords to do 2 special shows are irresistible
for the remaining bandmembers; the rest is - brand new -
history.

De Deventer/Hengelose band Cords wordt in 1990 opgericht
door Simone Holsbeek (zang), Trush (v/h Maz) Morsink
(gitaar), Arnoudt Pieters (drums) en Marc Fabels (bas). De
band vindt al snel, te midden van invloeden als Sonic
Youth, Soundgarden, My Bloody Valentine en Smashing
Pumpkins, een heel eigen geluid, dat het best te
omschrijven is als noiserock-meets-psychedelica. Die
unieke sound wordt opgepikt door de legendarische
BBC-radiomaker John Peel, die niet alleen de demo draait,
maar Cords in 1991 ook naar Londen haalt voor een Peel
Session.
Onder meer door veel optredens door Europa neemt Cords'
bekendheid snel toe, en hoewel er vanuit zowel Nederland
als Engeland interesse is om de band te contracteren,
tekent Cords eind 1992 - als eerste Nederlandse band in de
geschiedenis - een Amerikaans platencontract voor het
debuutalbum, Taurus No Bull, bij het label TVT Records.
De band betrekt een loft in downtown New York, waar Taurus
No Bull ook wordt opgenomen; optredens aldaar (o.a. in het
roemruchte CBGB's), opnames van de EP Gasping in The Magic
Shop Studio ( NY) en een tour door de VS volgen.
Tussendoor speelt Cords in eigen land op het allereerste
Lowlandsfestival. Na een middeneuropese tour in het
voorprogramma van The Gun Club in 1994 wordt in juli van
dat jaar een tweede Peel Session opgenomen. Het jaar
daarop laat Cords het Deense Roskilde Festival kennismaken
met hun verzengende noisemuziek, inmiddels met bassiste
Jacky Sunshine in de gelederen.
Het volgende, meer song-georinteerde album
Hear!See!Feel!Taste! wordt in eerste instantie in eigen
beheer uitgebracht. Als zowel Hear!See!Feel!Taste! als
opvolger No Guru No Method No Beeper in 1997 alsnog in de
VS worden uitgebracht, volgen zowel een Amerikaanse als
Australische promotietoer.
In 1999 verschijnt het door Steve Albini (PJ Harvey,
Nirvana) opgenomen album Lunchbox. Cords treedt in
thuisbasis Deventer nog op met het Oostnederlands
Kamerorkest, maar in oktober van dat jaar besluiten de
leden definitief hun eigen muzikale wegen in te slaan -
Cords wordt opgeheven.
